Americans don't seem scared by Nigerian people. Despite the claims in Toronto about Americans are rude and xenophobic, I have noticed Americans have been very receptive towards Nigerians at least in a casual sense.. I met a lizard last year at a festive event and she was originally from NY burbs, 30 mins drive from NYC. That being said, she was definitely an NY lizard in approach, impatience and speech patterns. I told her that my origins were from Naija and she initially faltered but 'recovered' and we continued. We did close the deal quickly so it wasn't an obstacle. Speaking to other Naija guys who were fresh (literally 1 or 2 years in the states complete with accent), they hadn't experienced any resistance to being from Naija. In contrast, saying one had any Naija roots in Toronto was a killa and often killed my link prospects there. I know this because I was let down on many occasions after being coaxed to give up the cultural roots (I'm a London man primarily).
I know for a fact that this was a factor because I started to faking origin and saying I was from St Kitts to the lizards. After piping down a few of them when I eventually revealed the origins (too late after the lizards have given up the saltfish), the reptiles admitted that if they had known from the jump, they wouldn't have let me get the goods.

I was at a video shoot recently with a Naija theme to it (several patrons were wearing complete native attire) and a few white Americans stopped by in interest to query. Some of the guys told them that we were from Naija (direct!) and the response to this was:
"Cool!"
I've been making a concerted event to hang with the local Naijas around (younger guys or young minded with an average age of around 28). I actually met Nigerian groupies who were thirsting to go to Lagos and also taste jelof rice. A few of them have tasted that sturdy Naija bush meat, turgid and tumescent. This has been a cultural eye opener for me. It may be different in other parts of America as I reside in the South.
